Summer Sausage Salad

Another possible name: Left over Salad 1

I threw together some basics: lettuce, onion, carrots.

Then I added some left over grilled kielbasa chopped up, sprinkled some crumpled garlic&herb Wheat Thins, doused with Makoto, squirted with lemon juice and mixed!

It was very refreshing, yummy, flavorful, and filling

White Soup

Today I'm not feeling well. I've been sick a few times, and not sure what is causing this. However, I know that a soup is good. Not only will it warm me, but I know of several foods which would boost the immunity system and settle the stomach. I based it off egg drop soup, in order to get some protein.

In my wok, I sweated four cloves of garlic and half an onion. Once those were nearly done, I sprinkled about 2tbsp of mustard powder, 1tbsp of ginger powder (only because my ginger root had spoiled), and 1.5tsp of basil. After mixing that well, I added in 3c of Swanson chicken broth. Once the broth was boiling, I stirred in two beaten eggs. After it was clear that the eggs were cooked, I added in 1/2c of Mueller's elbow pasta and 1tbsp of pine nuts. I only then waited for the pasta to be cooked!

It is very delicious. The smell alone settled my stomach thanks to the ginger. The thickness and heartiness felt good and substantial. The pine nuts added a delightful crunch. I will definitely make this again - even when not feeling ill.

Salad 1

Ok, not so creative with the names. :P

My latest salad the past few weeks (about once or twice a week) is really yummy with good flavors and great crunch!

I start by chopping up some romaine, about a cup and a half. Then I pour on a quarter cup of SunMaid raisins, third cup of French's french fried onions, and and 3oz of pine nuts from Whole Foods. I top it all off with 1.5 oz of Makoto's honey ginger dressing then toss and enjoy!

Introduction

Allo!

Today is Valentines's day, yet my poor husband is working both of his part time jobs and we'll have an hour together. Luckily, neither of us focus on what should be based on calendars, marketing, or others "should be's." Being our first married Valentine's, my husband did want to do something. After tossing around many ideas, we set out with a gift card ready to get a simple, cheap, yet tasty and filling meal. Nearly there, I decided I wanted something specific. I wanted an equally simply, tasty, and filling meal - only instead of the planned soup, sandwich, and latte I wanted steak with juicy and pure tasting vegetables and a crisp, tasty, salad.

I had memories of a restaurant my family went to on occasion. Being that I live one thousand miles away from home this was not an option. Near us is a chain we'd been wanting to try, so being the awesome husband he is, he turned around and went there. Alas, as good as it might be, it was way more than we wanted to spend. We may be doing well, but we got here by being realistic. Thirty dollars a plate isn't realistic for us.

Two strikes and we were hungry. Since I work the 'late' shift at work, it was nearly 9pm on a Friday night. We went to yet another chain nearby, also know for its steaks. I dislike the ambiance - music and decor just aren't me. However, their food is worth it. I got exactly what I was looking for excepting two things: the drink was weak and the salad was bland.

Our salads had one choice: dressing. It had two thirds of a cereal bowl of fresh iceberg lettuce, diced cucumber and tomato (a pinch of the former and half a teaspoon of the latter), three tiny rings of red onion, 8 inch square croutons then smothered in 2 tablespoons of dressing. It was weak and pathetic.

"I can make better salads than this." I said to my husband.
His reply was, "Yes, you do make much better salads."

My first thought was that to replicate the same thing ad infinitum for a restaurant is different than making something at home. Then again, my salads are quick and easy. They tend to be made in a rush because I'm shaking with hunger, literally.

Thus births this blog. Maybe an occasional other food. But mostly good salads.
